On a deserted island far far from any mainland, Kim and Ron were battling a horde of robotic animals. Kim was only on the island due to a very strange distress call and when she got there she found a very old aged gentlemen being attacked by the robotic monsters.
She had a hard time fending them off, but thanks to Wade finally coming through she was able to turn her Kimmunicator into an EMP emitting device, instantly destroying all the creatures which they shook and rattled into pieces upon being affected by the EMP. Rushing to the old man's side, Kim sadly found him on his death bed.

That is an excellent start, you go in there with a *bang* and don't let your reader go again. For the change you have apparenlty intended, you picked just the perfect deviation point in the story. It is fully believable and fits Hermione's character - AND it is late in the volumes so it doesn't change the whole canon.
